Antique Kenloc Straight Line Engine Turning Machine QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS MACHINE? Contact Cliff Davis at 401.724.3200 during normal business hours (EST)or email cdavis@goldmachinery.com referencing Kenloc Straight Line machineYou are bidding on a Antique Kenloc Straight Line Engine Turning Machine This fine Engine Turning Machine is for Decorative, Guilochet Engraving/Ornamental Turning. Sometimes called a straight-line engraving machine or lining machine, it will engrave/guilloche on flat and curved articles. This is a hand-operated floor model machine that we acquired from an engine turner's estate. It is complete and in very good overall and operating condition only needing a serious bath and a good oiling. Re-painting some of the previously painted surfaces would make it look nicer, however, that is totally up the the buyer. The machine shows signs of surface rust due to the fact that it had been used/kept in the owners basement which was damp and musty, however, it is only surface rust and easily removable with a little scotch brite or steel wool pad and some penitrating oil. We are offering this machine exactly as is, as shown in the photos and described in the text, so please ask all questions as early as possible giving us time to answer before the auction ends. Please email me directly cdavis@goldmachinery.com should you have any questions about the machine, shipping rates, or want additional or specific area photos and I will be more than happy to promptly reply. GOOD LUCK BIDDING.IMPORTANT: FREIGHT COSTS ARE DETERMINED BY WEIGHT, SIZE AND DESTINATION, SO PLEASE OBTAIN RATES PRIOR TO BIDDING. PLEASE ALLOW 3-5 DAYS FOR YOUR ITEM TO BE SHIPPED UNLESS OTHERWISE ARRANGED. A Quick Definition..Engine Turning, in French: "Guilloché", is really a branch of what the English call Ornamental or Complex Turning. It is a process in which metal/wood/ivory etc workpieces are moved mechanically against a fixed tool to cut a series of uniformly defined lines. It is akin to engraving with a ruler, or technical drawing on metal/wood/ivory, though it does not look like technical drawing, rather a decorative surface which reflects light in an interesting way and has a tactile value as well. The process is commonly used on metal, wood, ivory and other goods when applied directly, as it is not a fast process though by engine turning dies and reproducing the pattern it can be applied to all types of products.Designing Metal, Wood, Ivory & Other SurfacesEngine Turning is really a simple process from the designer's point of view. You cut wavy or straight lines on a surface exactly where you want them and in whatever direction or position you like. There are machines to cut wavy circular lines or even ellipses using waves. Any flat or convex surface can be engine turned as well as some concave surfaces. There are a few restrictions with 3D surfaces but in general you can do almost anything, hence the technical drawing analogy. In addition you can vary the depth of the cut as you travel along a line so it is possible to create an image in low relief rather like that on a coin but with the advantage that since it was generated from a series of cuts it has reflective qualities which "highlight" the image in a completely unique way.To put a pattern onto an impossible surface or on the inside of an object, the pattern can be applied (either directly or rolled from a die) to the surface while it is flat and the piece is formed up with the engine turning already on it.Configuration ExamplesFigure 1: Using the ratchet on the sliderest we can move the tool a little to the right at a time to achieve a series of parallel cuts...Figures 2 & 3: The Basic Pattern. What you get with repeated parallel cuts and no vertical relative movement of the pattern bar between cuts. Notice that since it is the work that moves the tool traces a mirror image of the pattern bar, modified by the radius of the roundness of the end of the touch sliding along the pattern bar.Figure 4: Zig zag moves, 5 up and 5 down about 0.5mm each on the crossing slide. The Pattern Bar was moved once after each cut vertically in relation to the rest of the machineFigure 5: A moiré made by reducing the vertical move at each end of the zig-zagFigure 6: The Pattern Bar and a Single Touch used with itFigure 7: A pattern sample being cut for a picture frame. Our suggestion was this pattern of double zig zag lines crossed to give low lozenge shaped pyramids. The top of each pyramid was opened up and cut into a tiny concave pyramid for setting a very small diamond with a grain at each corner. This left a good deal of metal between each stone but presented a very attractive design.Figure 8: The engine turned clock case ready for polishing. The original blank sheet of metal for this case would have also been scored for the boxmaker to fold and solder, using a straight line machine.
