This fine quality pendant brooch features a solid gold plaque in the center with a depiction of the Raimondi Stone, which was originally found in 1840 in the ruins of a great temple in the Peruvian Andes. The Raimondi Stone dates to the 1st millenium B.C. and is from the Chavin culture, which pre-dates the Incan civilization by 2000 years. It was found in inside the principal Chavin temple, located at Chavin de Huantar, Peru and has been exhibited in Lima since 1874. The Raimondi Stone is a beautifully finished granite slab carved with a deity figure or Staff God in relief. The deity represented is a being of human form standing in full face position and holding a vertical staff in each hand. He has a mouth with turned down corneers, upper and lower canines and elaborated figurative treatment of the hair. The pendant brooch measures just over 1 1/4" in length with a width of 1 1/2" and hangs from a 26" long silver chain. It is stamped "925, 18K, PERU, R1.9352" along the reverse side and the chain is unmarked. The pendant and chain have a combined weight of 21.7 grams and are both in very good condition with just minor signs of wear consistent with age and use. Click on each image to enlarge.
